MONDAY

So, a new week begins.  Remember, your home learning will only be as good as the effort you are willing to put into it.  Use this opportunity to become a more independent learner and to guide your own learning.  Ultimately, it will be great practice for when you go to your new schools come September.

NOTE:  Week 1's home learning will be available until this Wednesday and then removed from the site to free up some space.

Weekly assemblies to reflect on at home can be found here!

 WRITING

A break from the formal letter writing today.  Use this time to make sure you proofread what you have written already and make any corrections.  Read it to an adult for feedback.  Catch up with any writing you may have missed over the week.

If you have already done these things, have a go at answering some, or all, of these questions that were in the back of our class reading book.

G'Day, mates!  Here is the learning for today.  I hope it is going well so far.  I am getting a bit bored at home (as I am sure you and your family are), so I might do some impromptu Shell Shockers games.  Look out for the codes!

 WRITING

Here is the shape we are using for our formal letter to the Queen

Formal Letter Shape

These are the three reasons why we want the Queen to help Ahmet.

  1. Ahmet being separated from his mum and dad
  2. The long and dangerous journey and why he had to make it
  3. The tragic death of his sister

Today, we will be starting MAIN TEXT 3 (see the shape from last Monday’s lesson) using reason 3 from the list above.  You can continue from last week’s writing BUT start a new paragraph.

REMEMBER:  There are online thesauruses you can use to improve your vocabulary choices.

Here is the answer for the problem.

Problem Answer

Believe it or not, we have pretty much completed the Year 6 maths curriculum.  Well done!  For our home learning now, we will be going over some of the trickier topics (including fractions – hooray), but first we are going to be solving visual and word problems involving addition and subtraction.  Remember, to read questions carefully and use the appropriate formal method e.g. column addition.

With these questions, you will need to draw the puzzles (or print them out if you are lucky enough to have a printer that works)!

 WRITING

We have now finished the formal letter we were writing together.  You will be starting to write your own independently written letter after the Easter holidays.  Here is the complete flipchart we used for the letter we have written.

Complete Flipchart

Have a read through to see how it all tied together (cohesion) and the different techniques we used.  Note how the three different paragraphs were about different ideas/arguments, but also how they linked together.  Also note how we used a range of techniques from the “shape” in each paragraph.

Shape

Now take the time to proofread the letter you have written and make any corrections or improvements.  Check for cohesion e.g. consistent use of tense; no grammatical errors; that it flows and there is no unnecessary repetition, that vocabulary choices are good.  Read it to an adult or older sibling and get their feedback.

REMEMBER:  There are online thesauruses you can use to improve your vocabulary choices.
